2018 has seen a lot of mainstream movies and plays where more great deaf characters were played by deaf actors which is wonderful. Gone are the days when deaf actors were given roles as deaf characters that were not displayed in the positive light.

Despite the fact that many deaf and hard of hearing prefer open captions on a screen in movie theaters, many theaters force them to use cumbersome closed captioned devices such as CaptiView or RearView or Sony Glass. Many deaf and hard of hearing people share their frustrating experiences with those devices.
Since learning about TV captions in 8th grade, I cannot imagine my life without good quality captions – for movies, videos, live events. I didn’t start going to movie theaters until I was in college when I learned about movies with open captions that were displayed directly on the screen and it was a wonderful experience! Sadly, later more theaters decided to stop offering open captions and started to force deaf and hard of hearing patrons to use cumbersome closed captioned devices.
